Gorillazis the eponymous debut studio album by virtual bandGorillaz. It was released on March 26, 2001 in the United Kingdom byParlophoneand in the United States byVirginRecords.
The brainchild of Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz emerged from London as a virtual band composed of four animated characters: 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel. This playful, surreal concept allowed Albarn to break free of Britpop conventions and explore a wide array of sounds, from hip-hop to dub, reggae, and electronic music. The album, produced by hip-hop legend Dan the Automator, featured an eclectic mix of collaborators, including Del the Funky Homosapien, whose verses on Clint Eastwood gave the album its breakout hit, and Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto, adding a distinct flair to 19-2000.
