In the years leading up to the album, Television had become a prominent act on theNew York Music sceneand generated interest from a number of record labels, eventually signing a record deal with Elektra. The group rehearsed extensively in preparation forMarquee Moonbefore recording it atA&R recordingsin September 1976. It was produced by the band’s frontmanTom Verlaineand sound engineerAndy Johns.

ForMarquee Moon, Verlaine and fellow guitarist Richard Lloydabandoned contemporarypunk rock’s power chords in favor of rock andjazz-inspired interplay, melodic lines, andcounter-melodiesThe resulting music is largelyhook-driven with complex instrumental parts (particularly on longer tracks such as “Marquee Moon“), while evoking themes of adolescence and transcendence through imagery in urban, pastoral, andnocturnalmodes, including references to the geography ofLower Manhattan. Influenced byBohemianandFrench poetry, Verlaine’s lyrics also feature puns and double entendres intended to give the songs an impressionistic quality in describing his perception of an experience.

The US rock band, formed in New York City in 1973, Television was part of the early ’70s New York underground rock scene.

Marquee Moon, the 1977 debut album by Television is often considered a seminal work to come out of the New York punk scene. However, the album differs from conventional punk in its clean, textured guitar-based arrangements.

Due to this aspect, it is often cited as being important to the development of post-punk and New Wave genres.
